What is xG (expected goals)?

xG rates how likely a shot is to become a goal. Learn how expected goals is calculated, what it tells you about a match, and where it falls short.

xG (expected goals) puts a number between 0 and 1 on every shot, showing how often similar attempts have ended in the net; add up a side's shots and you get its xG for the match. This page explains how the figure is worked out, what it reveals about a performance, and what it never sees — finishing quality, goalkeepers, red cards and the story of the game.

xG (expected goals) puts a number between 0 and 1 on every shot: the share of similar attempts that have historically ended up in the net. Add up the numbers for all the shots a side took and you get its xG for that match. 1.8 xG means "an average team would have scored roughly 1.8 goals from these chances".

So xG does not describe the scoreline. It describes how closely the scoreline matches what actually happened on the pitch. A team that loses 1-0 while producing 2.4 xG created plenty and finished none of it.

How is xG calculated?

The idea is simpler than it sounds. Take tens of thousands of shots from matches already played and ask one question: of the attempts that looked like this one, what share went in? If the answer is 12 per cent, the shot is worth 0.12 xG. What makes two shots count as "similar" comes down to a handful of features:

To give you a rough feel, these are the kinds of values you run into most often:

These are approximate figures drawn from averages published by public xG sources, not fixed constants. Every provider counts in its own way, which is why the same match can read, say, 1.4 at one source and 1.9 at another. Following a single source consistently is far more useful than mixing several.

An illustrative example

The match below is hypothetical. It exists only to make the point.

Team A lost 1-0 away. The numbers: 18 shots and 2.3 xG for Team A; 4 shots and 0.5 xG for Team B, who scored from a single counter-attack. Read the scoreline alone and you say "Team A were poor". Read the xG and you say "Team A created and could not finish". The second reading is better informed — but it describes what happened, it does not promise anything about the next fixture. This is why shot count and xG are worth reading side by side rather than one on its own.

What xG does not tell you

1. A single match is too small to trust

A side might manage a dozen or so shots in a match. In a sample that small, luck has plenty of room. xG starts to mean something across five to ten matches, not one.

2. It does not know who took the shot

The calculation does not recognise players. Two different footballers striking from the same spot are given the same xG. A genuinely sharp finisher can stay above their xG for a long stretch.

3. It leaves the goalkeeper out

A keeper in form does not reduce the opponent's xG on paper, yet on the pitch they take those goals away one by one.

4. It cannot see the attack that never became a shot

A side that walks into the box again and again without pulling the trigger records low xG, even with most of the possession.

5. It does not know the story of the match

A red card, a team easing off at 3-0, a striker carrying a knock, a rotated line-up before a cup tie: none of that reaches the number. You have to add the context yourself.

Four things to keep in mind when reading xG

  1. Look at the average across the last five or six matches rather than a single game.
  2. Always read xG alongside xGA (expected goals against). Knowing the attack while ignoring the defence is half a picture.
  3. Keep home and away figures apart. Plenty of sides behave like two different teams depending on where they play.
  4. Watch the gap between goals scored and xG. In past data, teams that spend a long spell scoring well above their xG have often drifted back towards their own average — a tendency seen in the numbers, not a rule that holds for every team.

Where xG fits into a wider reading

xG and xGA are two of the figures worth checking when you want to understand how many goals a fixture is likely to contain, which is why they come up in any discussion of Over/Under 2.5 goals. Where both sides regularly generate xG and regularly concede it, the both teams to score (BTTS) question deserves a separate look. On their own these numbers settle nothing; they make sense only alongside the context of the game: squad news, the fixture list, and what each side needs from the ninety minutes.
