How to read football match statistics: what xG, shots on target and box shots really show, why possession misleads, and which numbers carry weight.

Expected goals (xG), shots inside the penalty area and shots on target are the most meaningful numbers on a match sheet, while possession misleads on its own because it measures who has the ball, not where the ball is. This guide explains how much weight each number carries, what defensive data adds, and three rules for reading a match sheet.

The most useful numbers in a match summary are expected goals (xG), shots from inside the penalty area and shots on target. The most talked-about number, and the one that tells you least on its own, is possession: keeping the ball is not the same as doing something dangerous with it.

Which numbers carry the most weight?

A match screen throws dozens of figures at you, and they are not all worth the same. Roughly, this is the order our analysts read them in:

Those weightings are not measured coefficients; they are the order our team reads the data in.

Why possession misleads

Possession measures who had the ball, not where it was. A side passing between its own centre-backs and a side working the ball around the opposition box can post the same percentage. The number does not tell them apart.

The second reason is the scoreline. A team that goes ahead usually drops deeper and gives the ball away on purpose, so low possession is sometimes the result of being on top, not a sign of being outplayed. Closing out a 1-0 win with, say, 38 per cent of the ball proves nothing on its own.

It becomes useful in two cases: when a side moves clearly away from its own norm, and when you read it alongside shots and touches in the box. A team that normally sees 60 per cent of the ball dropping to 35 tells you something; the bare percentage does not.

Shots, or shots on target?

Total shots measure quantity: a hopeful swing from 30 metres and a tap-in from six metres land in the same column. Shots on target is narrower and more honest: it counts only attempts that reached the goal. It is still incomplete, though: a tame effort at the goalkeeper counts, while a fierce strike off the crossbar does not.

What xG corrects

Expected goals rates every shot on its own merits, by where it was struck from and what kind of chance it was: how often have shots like this ended up in the net? A drive from distance and a header from six metres stop being equals. Our separate guide on expected goals covers this in detail.

Defensive numbers: the half most people skip

Most statistical talk stops at the attacking column. Yet how a side defends is the steadier half of its profile, and it needs different numbers:

Attacking numbers describe what a team did; defensive numbers describe what it allowed. One without the other is half a picture.

Three rules for reading a match sheet

  1. Who was the opponent? A five-match average means nothing until you know who those matches were against.
  2. Remember the scoreline. The last half hour of a match settled early is really defensive data, whatever column it lands in.
  3. A small sample is not proof. A three-match run gives an idea, not a conclusion.

One match, two different stories

Say Team A has 65 per cent of the ball and 14 shots, but only 3 on target and 0.9 expected goals. Team B has 35 per cent, 8 shots, 5 on target and 1.7 expected goals. (Hypothetical figures, for illustration only.) Most will say Team A dominated; in fact Team B created the danger. Even if it finishes 1-1, B's data tells you more about the weeks ahead.

In short

The same habit applies everywhere: in goal markets such as over/under 2.5, in both teams to score, in corner analysis. You do not read the number; you read the football behind it. A statistic explains what has already happened; it never promises what comes next.
