What is double chance?

Double chance (1X, 12, X2) covers two of the three results. Learn why the odds drop, how the maths works and when the market actually makes sense.

Double chance covers two of a match's three possible results at once (1X, 12, X2): the coverage widens and the price shortens. This page explains that trade-off with a worked example and separates the matches it genuinely fits from the ones where it adds nothing.

Double chance is a football market that covers two of the three possible full-time results at the same time: home win, draw, away win. Because it spans two outcomes rather than one, it covers a lot of ground, and the price attached to it is much shorter than a single-result selection.

So double chance is not a shortcut. It is a trade: broader coverage is paid for with a lower price. Once that balance is clear, it becomes much easier to see which kind of match the market actually suits.

The three double chance options

OptionWhat it coversThe only result that breaks it
1XThe home side wins or the match is drawnThe away side wins
12Either side wins (no draw)The match is drawn
X2The match is drawn or the away side winsThe home side wins

Here "1" stands for the home team, "2" for the away team and "X" for the draw. Because two of the three results are already covered, only one outcome is left that can undo the reading.

Why is the price so short?

To see roughly what probability a price implies, divide 1 by the odds. We go through that calculation step by step in our guide to reading football odds.

Take a purely hypothetical fixture. Suppose the home win is listed at 2.00 and the draw at 3.40. Those two prices imply roughly 50% and 29%, for a combined figure of about 79%. A 1X selection covers both of those outcomes, so on paper it sits at that same 79%, which works out at close to 1.26 in decimal terms; the price you actually see is usually a shade below that. The numbers here exist only to show how the arithmetic works, and real prices change from match to match and from one odds list to the next. A short price is not a flaw. It is the direct consequence of how much ground the selection covers.

A worked example

Picture a home side that has controlled its recent matches without finishing its chances, up against a visiting team that sits deep and is content with a point. Saying "the home team wins" is fragile here, because the second most likely result is the draw. A 1X reading covers exactly that picture: it holds whether the home side wins or the match finishes 0-0 or 1-1. The single scenario that undoes it is the away team taking the game on the counter.

The opposite picture also exists. If both teams play open football and both have been scoring and conceding freely, the draw becomes relatively less likely, and 12 becomes worth discussing. Its price is usually very short, though, and the coverage may not be worth the one result it leaves exposed. In matches like that, goal-based markets such as both teams to score or over/under 2.5 goals tend to ask a more useful question.

Which match profiles does it fit?

When it stops making sense

Double chance or handicap?

Both spread risk, but they come at it from different directions. Double chance widens the number of results covered. A handicap instead adds a virtual goal margin to the scoreline and does a comparable job, usually at a longer price. We set the two side by side in our handicap guide. Knowing how to read match statistics makes it far easier to judge which of them suits a particular fixture.

In short

Double chance asks a narrower question than it first appears to: not "who wins this match", but "which single result am I least willing to leave open". Answering that honestly still depends on reading the two teams properly: home and away form kept separate, goal production, squad news and how much each side needs the point. The market widens the net; it does not do the reading for you.
